Gideon’s Bakehouse – East End Market Orlando.

With a store front and design that would not be out of place in Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley or a Victorian London market, Gideon’s Bakehouse oozes quality and decadence.

I was somewhat bemused about the founding date of 1898, but web site research claims that the Gideon’s team purchased what they thought was a family cookbook dating from circa 1898. It turned out in fact to be the diary of a young boy named Gideon who dreamed of opening a bakery to bring his family out of poverty. Undoubtedly a great story, but whatever the reason for starting the company, by combining these vintage recipes with modern ingredients and methods, there is no doubt they have started their own history and one that I hope will be around for a long time.

Gideon’s advise the uninitiated to start with the Chocolate Chip Cookie and then branch out! So we did just that. This is a giant of a cookie and more like a small cookie cake, a chocolate, vanilla cookie combination rolled in chocolate chips and sprinkled with coarse sea salt. To say we were impressed with this cookie is an understatement, it has won many awards and you can really taste why, I won’t attempt to describe it here as if defies most adjectives I can create – Just go and try one for yourself.

They also have many other cookies, both regular and seasonal, along with cakes, cheesecakes and pies, but we never got that far.

Got to have an excuse to come back don’t we?
