George’s Gourmet Cookies – 501 North Orlando Avenue Winter Park.
Although renowned for their delightful brownies, cookies and bars (more on that tomorrow) George’s Gourmet Cookies make an amazing sandwich, so after a hectic day stocking up for the holidays I dropped by for a lunchtime snack. Currently there is a bit of construction work going on around the café, but don’t be put off by that or the fact that the cafe address is North Orlando Avenue but situated on Lee Road.
The small café feels like home, with a couple of painted tables and chairs and deco artwork adorning the walls, you cannot escape the Beatles influence as they feature posters of the bands song lyrics, even the Bull Dog statue by the door is named “Ringo”.
Service is very much “Old School” and all the better for it, all customers are greeted as old friends and made to feel right at home, a quality customer service that is sadly lacking in many cafés and restaurants these days. I would go back just for this fact alone, but let’s talk about the sandwiches.
I chose one of the “George’s Specialty” sandwiches the “Puddsy” (some of the menu options are named after family pets) – this sandwich comprised of “In House” fresh roasted Turkey breast, Applewood bacon, Muenster cheese, homemade sun dried tomato dressing, served on a fresh baked French Baguette. A choice of two sides are available with this purchase, I chose the fries and delicious homemade potato salad.
The thick hand carved Turkey was moist and delicious, complemented by the bacon and other ingredients it made every bite count. The bread was perfect and in correct proportion to the filling.
All in all, a great sandwich filled to bursting, they also have an award-winning Chili and a wide selection of other sandwiches and salads, all equally amazing and made with the same amount of care and dedication.
On writing this review the adjectives, Fresh, Homemade and In House seem to keep recurring, which is a great indication of the quality and attention to the food source that goes a long way in making Georges a phenomenal success.
George’s Gourmet has been serving the Central Florida area since 1989, and this experience shows, in the immortal words of the Beatles, “I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love”, but it can buy me an amazing sandwich!
Come back tomorrow for a review of the brownies!!
