Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa – 1326 North Mills Avenue Orlando.
This compact restaurant along Mills Avenue in the Mills 50 district certainly packs a punch well above its size. The owner, Thomas Ward, has made great use of the limited space available to provide an amazing counter service BBQ restaurant with an industrial feel, white washed brick walls, stone floor and open theater kitchen, it is right on trend, with a patio area for cooler days and nights, it’s the perfect place to hang out and enjoy great food.
The term “One man’s meat is another man’s poison “could not be truer than when describing BBQ, as everyone has their own interpretation on what makes BBQ great, but make no mistake Pig Floyd’s is right up there with the best, as witnessed by the line out the door and the happy sighs of customers tucking into Thomas Ward’s food.
Spoiled for choice, we selected:
Pork Al Pastor Taco – Pulled Pork with roasted pineapple, onion & cilantro. We have not had better even from our favorite Taco stand in the Condesa, Mexico City.
Butter Chicken Taco – Spiced Chicken tikka, pepitas, jalapenos, cilantro, Greek yoghurt & jasmine rice. Packed with flavor and a surprising combination and variation on the traditional taco. It shouldn’t work but it does!
Half Barbakoa Chicken & Quarter Pound of Brisket. The Chicken was perfect. Moist and delicately flavored with herbs & spices, combined with the rich Smokey Brisket, great BBQ.
Mexican Street Corn – With chili lime butter & Cotija cheese. A delicious and true version of the Elote, often found in urban zones of Mexico, usually sold by street vendors, but has now been elevated to even the classiest of restaurants such is its popularity.
We deliberately did not go for ribs this time, as the sandwich, taco and platter options caught our attention straight away, but that always leaves a great excuse to come back!
Service was pleasant, efficient and friendly, and even though the place was packed we never lacked attention. The restaurant also operates a take -out service and has a kid’s menu aptly named “Piglet Options”.
Pig Floyd’s recently opened a second location at Lake Nona Village so no excuse not to visit, they have you covered!
